Nikon D40 Viewfinder Replacement

  • Step 1 Back Cover

    • Remove the two visible 6.0 mm Philips #0 screws on the left and right sides of the viewfinder. These screws are highlighted in red.

  • Step 2

    • Remove the four 6.0 mm Philips #0 screws on the left and right sides of the camera.

  • Step 3

    • Remove the four highlighted 3.0 mm Philips #0 screws on the bottom of the camera.

    Worth mentioning, the top circled screw was a 6mm on my camera. The other 3 were 3mm.

  • Step 4

    • While pulling the bottom down, remove the back of the camera.

    • Be careful not to pull too hard on the back as it is connected via a ribbon cable. Be sure to disconnect this cable on the main board.

    • To disconnect the ribbon cable pull the small black tab upward and pull gently on the cable.

  • Step 5 Viewfinder

    • You will be able to see the ribbon cables coming out from the back panel, disconnect the cables.

    • Be careful not to pull too hard on the ribbon cables.

  • Step 6

    • Slowly push the upper body up until you see the frame of the viewfinder

    • Be careful while pulling the top camera body.

  • Step 7

    • Use a spudger to keep the upper body separate from the printed circuit board.

    • Wiggle the plastic eyepiece out of the frame. This may require some force.

  • Step 8

    • Remove the viewfinder with the plastic opening tool.

    • Do not push too hard while using the opening tool.

  • Step 9

    • The viewfinder has been removed!
